The Debra-Group takes care of our planet.

We also take our share of the responsibility for protecting our environment. We are working hard to reduce our environmental footprint as much as possible using science. At the same time, we continue to invest in improving our approach for the future.

How are we doing this?

Limiting waste products

For economic and technical-environmental reasons, we are reducing our waste products as much as possible. Many products are therefore given a second life, including manure, bristles and blood.

Water

All our wastewater flows are collected in an internal drainage system. The recovery and purification process then gets underway using a biological and aerobic water purification system. The filtered water is then used, for example, to clean our trucks.

We have been using, continuously extending and updating this system since 1996.

Energy-efficient heat exchanger

The boiling process produces hot vapours, which we transfer to a heat exchanger. Upstream, cold water is heated up to a temperature of  80°C - 95°C, which results in a significant energy saving:

  • A cooling system for hot vapours is no longer required.

  • The amount of gas consumed by our steam boiler is reduced drastically.

Cogeneration: flame oven

The residual heat from the flame ovens, which the pigs pass through, is converted into steam by a generator. In other words, the heat required to singe pigs is reused for energy purposes, which is another way of reducing the amount of gas we use!

Green electricity

All companies have to use a huge amount of gas and electricity. For this reason, as far as possible, we opt to buy green electricity, which is another way for us to help protect the environment.

Vehicle fleet

We have started to update our vehicle fleet, with the aim of making it more environment-friendly:

  • Our vehicles are fitted with special tyres, which reduce resistance and fuel consumption.

  • The cooling equipment in our refrigerated vehicles uses an environment-friendly cooling gas.

Environment-friendly packaging

Our cardboard packaging is made from 95% recycled material and 100% recyclable for the consumer. We work in partnership with a packaging supplier, which ensures that its operations are sustainable, while also aiming to reduce its environmental footprint and respect the environmental legislation.
